Breakfast at the butcher’s: Metzgerei in Stuttgart

Long time ago I used to live in the southern part of Germany, in Stuttgart, and I am always curious to discover new hot spots when coming back to this often underrated great city. Last time I stumbled by chance over a fantastic new restaurant called Metzgerei, which means butcher’s shop in English and which just blew me away. What a find!

The slogan of the new in-crowd location just hits the nail: “If I were you, I would love to be here!” And we really loved to be there….

And old butchery transformed into a trendy and cosy restaurant, dark blue walls on one side and raw bricks on the other, a huge wooden butcher’s table with high stools and other memorabilia of a butcher’s shop, living room style with shelves and sofas, flower pots on the wall and just the right lightning, which in many restaurants is often too bright. Belgin and Yilmaz Yogurtcu, the owners of the Metzgerei, just got it right to create that special atmosphere you don’t want to leave again.

We came there for breakfast on a Sunday morning and were overwhelmed by the great choice and creativity of their menu. We went for the Tyrolean breakfast with a huge piece of dark bread, garnished with yammy ham and eggy sunny side up and a Bavarian breakfast which included veal sausages with Pretzel and sweet mustard. I wish I had space left to try their New York Grilled Cheese Sandwich and their Belgian waffles. And next time I’ll certainly try their Sunday roast!

The lunch and evening menu looks as promising. A range of steaks from the 800 degree broiler are served with sweet potatoe fritters, guacamole and a Mexixan Pico de Gallo sauce, there are vegan and vegetarian dishes like the ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and chili walnut pesto and there’s even a gluten-free chocolate strawberry cake with mint joghurt cream. Besides a good range of wine they also serve a homemade and seasonal, unsweetened ice tea – just something for every taste.

What can I say? “If I were you, I would love to be there”!
