El del Frente – The best hangout in Old Havana

Spending some days in Havana and fed up with all the very touristy Mojito and Daiquiry bars? Then definitely make sure to discover El del Frente, my top favourite place when it comes to having a drink in Cuba’s buzzing capitol. Stroll the cobbled streets and squares of Old Havana, a UNESCO world heritage site, watch the coloured vintage cars go by, listen to some Rumba riffs and admire the beautifully restored architectural gems. Once thirsty or hungry, head to El del Frente for a well deserved break. While this bar is in the middle of everything it is not easy to find as there is only a tiny little door leading to a staircase without a big signage. Once you have climbed to the first floor you will reach the nicely decorated restaurant. From there some more steps will bring you to the rooftop bar, where you may hangout and taste all their fantastic Gin cocktails.

Be it the “Gin special Industriales” with Master Gin and blue Curacao, the “Habana Londres” with Beefeater Gin, Rum, Sugar and Maraschino or the “Red point” made out of Tanqueray Gin, sweet Carribean peppers and a few drops of bitters, they are all yammy, oversized and served in funny jars which one would usually use to preserve marmelade in. The owner of El del Frente, 27 year old Cuban Orlando Abreu, who runs this place with a great feeling for decor, quality drinks, food and extremely friendly staff can really be proud of his trendy place.

Coming to what is offered on the menu you won’t be disappointed either. While food in Cuba is usually more on the downside, you may order anything from El del Frente’s menu: Filled empanadillas with a sweet sauce, Pasta Al Buey with beef and coriander, Grilled lobster or a fish Tataki. I really wonder who is that skilled Chef in their kitchen and next time I will ask him or her to come out for a chat. Just curious!

You will find this superbe place in O’Reilly Street 303, which is opposite the restaurant called “O’Reilly 304” and the reason why they called it El del Frente, which means “the one in front”.

El Del Frente , 303 O’Reilly, between Habana and Aguiar, upstairs through the tiny glass door. Open noon until midnight. Make sure to book a table to be on the safe side. Tel. + 53 78 630206
